How to Prevent Dry Skin and Chapped Lips in the Wintertime
Chapped lips and dry skin can be downright painful. When I was a child, my lips were so dry one winter that my parents had to get a prescription from the dermatologist to heal them. The medicated lip balm worked, but why were my lips so dry in the first place?
There are some common sense methods to address the root causes of chapped lips:
#1The problem may be dry heat. If you are living in an apartment in the city, dry heat can steal moisture from your skin. Maintain a dewy, glowing complexion by using an ultrasonic humidifier in your bedroom. I fill the one on my night table with reverse osmosis water and let the mist safeguard my skin all night.
#2 Apply some lip balm for immediate relief. I formulate my lip balms with handcrafted organic calendula oil, which does wonders for inflamed, cracked skin. After applying lip balm, practice keeping your mouth closed during the day so that the air won’t dry out your lips. Try to breathe through your nose more often.
#3 Avoid acidic beverages such as orange juice when your lips in bad shape. Take a vitamin C supplement instead. Higher intakes of dietary vitamin C are associated with a decrease in dry skin. Vitamin C also promotes collagen and elastin production to keep skin firm and supple. Since vitamin C is water soluble, you need to consume it every day.
#4 Make sure you're not deficient in B Vitamins, especially B12. If your gut lining is compromised, which is the case for many American gluten consumers, then your body has trouble absorbing B12. This is another overlooked cause of dry lips. A sublingual, or under the tongue B12 supplement can improve your energy levels as well as your chapped lips.
#5 Drink more water. Water: For Health, for Healing, for Life: You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty! by F. Batmanghelidj, explains that dry mouth is actually one of the last signs of chronic dehydration. According to Batmanghelidj, it takes 72 hours to rehydrate. One day I will post on how this book was the answer to a three month medical problem that my doctors couldn’t figure out.
I hope you follow these tips so you can have a comfortable winter season and smile with ease!
